Dave Miles from BCFM started the first of a brand new feature on the Bristol music. We played a live track from Cue Fanfare recorded for his show A Cup of Tea and a Piece of Cake. This track as well as many others is available to hear on the official Cup of Tea and a Piece of Cake website.

CHILDREN OF MERCY BOOK AND COMPILATION BRING STORIES OF INDIE MUSIC TO LIGHT FOR A GOOD CAUSE

Spokane, Wash. (April 1st, 2011) — A good cause is always worth supporting, so the fact that the Children of Mercy book and CD compilation help out two causes make this project a must-see. Children of Mercy: Tale and Teachings From The World of Independent Music is a collection of stories and essays by several elite members of the indie music world that will not only open the eyes of the outside world to the independent music scene but also raise money to fight Cystic Fibrosis.

Along with the compilation CD, the book brings to light stories from the independent music scene while it raises money for the fight against Cystic Fibrosis, a disease that has affected the son of one the contributors, Swedish musician and writer Ola Nyberg. Ron Trembath, creator of the project, pursued funding for the book publishing on Kickstarter and obtained over $2900 in pledges to ensure that 100% of the profits and royalties from the book go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in the US, as well as the Cystic Fibrosis Trust in the UK.

Anna Lynne Williams of the indie folk legends Trespassers William, Anja McCloskey of Haunted Stereo& Sotones Records, Shawn Fogel of Golden Bloom, and Portland Mercury journalist Ryan Feigh, and Pastime Records CEO Andy Botterill are just some of the artists, producers, label runners, promoters, writers, and listeners from the world of independent music that have contributed their essays on life in the independent music scene. A wide array of topics including, DIY, effects of the internet, performing, break ups, and indie history will be found in this treasure trove of indie music perspectives. The book seeks to open the eyes to the outside world on how tough it can be to be a solely independent musician as well as highlight why it might just be the only true way to be a real artist in the musical world. It also gives advice to those currently living the independent music “dream” or those that are interested in creating music without the fear of losing their soul to the media monster know as the mainstream.

The compilation CD was released on The Beechfields Record Label on February 8th.  The book was released through Marquette Books LLC on April 1st.  Physical CDs include artwork by San Diego based pop artist Kathie Bayne.  The CD includes tracks by Moneytree, Menhirs Of Er Grah, Lotte Kestner (Anna-Lynne Williams’ solo project), Robin Grey, Cleeman and The Pristines. In a better late than never podcast this week I played Kodiak Jack, Coloured Lines, Doyle and the Forefathers, John Duffy, Watch With Mothers played Botyov 1791, Matt Taylor and due to an error by me The Hot Vamp Club.

As I wrote this the day after I am glad to report that neither Paul or myself have a hangover. We put this down to the quality of that fine Polish beer Tyskie!

Because I had a gig to play tonight, this weeks episode is a little late.

I played another track from my vinyl Project but you’ll have to listen to find out which one!

Paul from Unplug the Jukebox came along and waxed lyrical about some band or other.

I asked the question “What have you lost that you want back” and got some very interesting answers. I also read out the results of my submission to the Music Xray focus group with hilarious consequences!

It’s an Unplug The Jukebox Special and how special it was and we all were.

We played Beatitudes Piece of Mind, Johnny Dark I like The Rain, In Darklight The Human Race, David Simnell and The Pumpernickles Let Love In.

Andrew Foster came in and enthralled  us with his music as well as his chat.

Mark “Smutz” Smith bought with him tracks by The Melodramas a rare acoustic version of Jackanory and The Lost Souls Club Romeo. He also gave an insight into how he his having great success in the far east with the many bands under his charge as well as his advice on how artists can maximize their gigs.

I recorded a cheeky little tune I just can’t get happy to round things off

It appears that the Markers Mark did the trick this week as I whizzed through the podcast at record speed!

I started off with and old favourite Diana by The Wilton Project, then a most beautiful tune by April Maybe May called Sugar & Mess and then Alibi by Planes Over Paris. Then came my interview with the delightful Anja McClosky who told me all about her imminent tour of America next month. If you’re about try and catch her to say hi.

I also played Anja’s amazing tunes Stephanie IV. Pam Shaffer’s track Henry followed this then a word or two from that nice Paul Lane from Unplug the Jukebox. Steve Lowis’s Rescue and newly named Alligator Indian and their top track Prospect Park.

A great track Fearless by ITTO fave Paul Liddell then Repeat by Tommy Eye (ft Matt Diaper), Odin the Great by Defy 4, Unravelling from Liz Longley, a tune from me which you can download for a £1 by clicking here. Sarah Griffin bought us close to the end with her brilliant tune poet and the whole chaotic festive jumble was bought to an end by The Lost Boys and their cracking tune I don’t want to be a Christmas Single.
